Michael asks…

REALITY VS FANTASY: Can I buy a sailboat and go live out in the middle of the ocean?

So, I’ve got some money saved up and I’m thinking about packing up my girlfriend and 2 dogs, moving to Florida and buying a boat and just kinda be a beach bum for a while. Actually, the idea is to put a mini recording-studio on a boat and record an album.

#1. The first question pertains to the pricing of a used boat: I’m not looking for something fast or fancy, I’m looking for a boat with a LOT of space because recording music on my laptop with a guitar and keyboard is a big part of my life and I need to ensure my boat has a room separate from my bedroom to do this. How much can I realistically expect to spend on a used boat with this much space? I have a boat budget of around $20k, but if I need to save up another year for a $30k boat, I’ll do so.

#2. Is there any law that says you can’t cruise out in the middle of the ocean, drop anchor and stay there as long as you like?

#3. I realize you can’t just live out in the ocean all the time. You have to dock, refill your gas/water and empty your sewage & trash. How does that work? Are there boat yards or something where you pay a monthly or annual rent and get use their sewage & water services? Can you live at these places too?

#4. Lastly, my equipment probably uses a lot of electricity and I’m wondering how exactly is electricity stored on the boat and is it enough?

Thanks!
