Your Questions About Wind Turbine Generators How They Work
Daniel asks…
Where can gold be used in wind turbines?
The main parts of a wind turbine is the blades, the rotor, the generator, the tail and the tower. But where (and how) can “gold” be used in one of these parts (or others) when the properties of gold is put into consideration?
Thank you for your answer, but if you HAVE to use gold in a wind turbine where would you use it?
admin answers:
Gold are good conductor of electricity, and sometimes it will alloy it with copper for semiconductor devices, gold are not good in turbine blades or same, because of the brittleness against high torque force, it is also not advisable in generators and rotors, they are not enough to produce magnitic force to convert it into electrical energy, it also not advisable in the construction of the tail and the tower, you need enough strength to the carry the whole weight of the wind mill, and the most number one reason is……………. It is too expensive to construct a huge wind turbine made of gold

How can i do a wind generator that creat electricity for a science fair project?
Hi, my teacher told me to create a wind generator for my science fair. Its not only doing the wing generator,no, i have to make electricity with it, like i get a bulb and it had to turn on with out batteries, only with the wing thing. Can someone give me like a web page or something that could help me please. HELP!!!!!
admin answers:
I think you mean wind turbine. A wind generator would generate wind, ie, an electric fan.
Look on line, there are dozens of possibilities. Search google for “school wind turbine”. Below link is one of the results.

How does a Vertical Axis Wind turbine work?
i am writing a report and i need to know how the generator on a VAWT works please thanks ~William~
admin answers:
Each vertical vane is an airfoil (airplane wing) that generates lift as air passes by it. This lift is changed into rotational torque because of the position of the vane with respect to the vertical axle.

How does a wind turbine work?
I need to know for a science project.
admin answers:
Yay. Science projects are a lot of fun, so I wish you luck with yours. 🙂
A wind turbine is a device that converts kinetic energy from the wind into mechanical energy. If the mechanical energy is used to produce electricity, the device may be called a wind generator or wind charger.
There is a ton of info on the sites that are pasted below.

Jenny asks…
How you hook up a volt/amp meter to a wind/hydro/solar generator?
I’m interested in having a combo volt/amp meter gauge set-up to monitor what my power generating source (such as hydro or solar or wind).
I would like to measure this before it reaches the charge controller. So if someone is at the generator source, they can see exactly what the generator is generating (for making tweaks).
Not quite sure how to do this.
I do have a inline watt meter that has one side that says “Source” and the other side says “LOAD” but I think it has to be hooked up in a circuit with a load.
My goal is to measure the generator by itself and not hooked up to anything. I know I can do this with voltage but not sure if this is possible for amps. I Heard I may need a shunt set-up to make this work?
Thanks in advance for your knowledge on making this work would be greatly appreciated. What I’m looking for is a wiring setup.
Thanks!
admin answers:
No probs, look on EBay for digital ammeters. They are cheap and some supply the shunt as well for less than a tenner.

Where can I find a Permanent Magnet Motor?
I am planning on building my own wind turbine on a smaller scale. I have been looking around at permanent magnet motors and would like to avoid spending the money on one off of Ebay. I’ve tried “googling” what appliances I could pull one of these out of but have had no luck. So if anyone knows of any appliances or shop machines that may have permanent magnet motors I would appreciate it.
admin answers:
Any DC motor is a permanent magnet motor. If you can get an old generator from an old vehicle (not an alternator) some motors are rated DC volts you can use these

Your Questions About Wind Turbine Technician Jobs
Maria asks…
Is a wind turbine technician a reliable career?
im looking at schools but am hesitant because i’ve been reading articles discussing wind turbines as a scam. and research that talks of wind turbines complete inefficiency. thoughts and advice?
admin answers:
Some for profit schools over estimate the number of jobs and how much they pay. But then, the number of guys who will climb a 200 ft tower with a tool belt is not that large.
Fortunately there is a demand for guys to crawl all over transformers and through switchgear, and you don’t have to climb any 200 ft towers. We pay $30 an hour.
What I could really use is more relay technicians who can create relay testing programs out of thin air.

How to build up a small wind power generator for home?
Hi all,
I want to build u an average sized wind turbine generator (about 1 Meter each Wing Size). so that i can get electricity for my home based appliances such as TV, AC, Refrigerators, etc.
What would be the requirements.. so i need to take any statutory approvals / license to do so,, and how to give input to my main Line into the home.
thanks to all in advance
admin answers:
First thing: Is this going to be a temporary source (in case of a power cut) or a more permanent source.
Because it will be an extension to your house, you might need planning permission. You have a certain ‘amount’ you can build on without permission, so if you haven’t used it, nor has a previous owner, than you can build it with permission. You can check this by going to your council.

Your Questions About Wind Turbine Technician Salary
Nancy asks…
Becoming a wind turbine technican?
I think I should pursue this career. I am 18 years old and the future looks really bright for this. People say that you could travel all around the country and that would be AWESOME. all of it sounds pretty good except for the salary. They only make on average 43k a year which is awful in my opinion. Does that sound about right? making 43k a year?
admin answers:
It’s anywhere from 36K to 70K depending on what you’re doing or what your skill set is.
Most “technicians” are just doing preventative maintenance/checks and there isn’t really a whole lot involved other than climbing.
They even call janitors “custodial technicians” so don’t let the title fool you especially if it’s a trade school trying to sell you on their program(s).
You should choose a career path that is what YOU want, not what pays the most. You’re going to have to go to work and do it every single day and if it’s not something you really enjoy, then you will become very disheartened very quickly. You also want to be treated with respect, not like someone who can be replaced by the next set of shoes that shows up.

Your Questions About Wind Turbine Generators How They Work
Daniel asks…
How to build or where to buy a wind turbine?
I need to build (or buy) a wind turbine that creates enough energy for a small LED light bulb. I used a small dc motor but it only creates between 0.056V and 0.087V. I need to build or buy one that works. I live in South Africa and all I saw were messed up prices for 500kw+ wind turbines. Time constraint till Friday. Please advise.
admin answers:
Best place to go for cheap is to go on YouTube and look up homemade wind turbines. Lots of guys use bicycle generators and car alternators and even make their own generators from magnets and coils of copper wire. They even show you how to make the propellers.
By the way, if you are only getting 0.087V from ANY dc motor, you might have a bad meter. I can get several volts from any DC motor just twisting the axle in my fingers, so something doesn’t sound right with your read there

Wind Generators.Does the AC generators for sale on ebay need a battery(exicter) to help them create voltage? I?
Does the AC generators for sale on ebay need a battery(exicter) to help them create voltage? I have a DC generator & it produces voltage without a battery. It will produce about 15 volts by spinning the shaft by hand. Just curious about the AC generator. Thanks.
admin answers:
It depends on the make and model
it is a design criterion
if there are permanent magnets, it will self start, the output control becomes more difficult
if it has only an electromagnet like an automobile alternator then it is much easier to control the output

What would you do if society colapsed end every one was on their own?
no cooperation between anyone, not even families
no utilities or power, unless you can provide it for yourself like your own well or generator and if you can you have to protect it from any one else who might want to steal it for them selves.
no sale or trade between people you just have what you own and what you can take or steal from others.
how long do you think you could last? Where would you go? What’s your plan?
admin answers:
Regenerate society among my family and our neighbors (we already have that planned)
We have wind / solar powering our ranch, and diesel back up… We also raise 80% of our own veggies and 95% of our meat / dairy… We have a 1 year stock of grain, coffee, sugar, etc.
I won’t mention our weapons… Or our security arrangements other than to say that a few Marine Gunny Sergeants and SEALs (friends) have been up here and approved / and improved.
We live 20 miles from town and 90 miles from the city… We have our own valley and access to another four via neighbors… Time to start a tribal / feudal system !!

Your Questions About Wind Turbines For Home Use
Donald asks…
Are wind turbines for the home beneficial?
I would like to learn more about the subject as I read not long ago that you can save money by installing wind turbines in your home. Are there any real benefits? Is it expensive?
admin answers:
Yes there are many benefits.
Using the wind to generate energy will permit you to be less dependent on fossil fuels, which are non renewable. So you will actually be helping our environment.
Also, there is the economic factor, you will save hundreds each month in electricity.
If you are going to buy a wind turbine for the home, be prepared, because they are costly. A solution for this would be to build the wind turbine yourself. Here I provide you with a link that has more information about that subject.
Good luck!

Your Questions About Wind Generators
Sandy asks…
How do I build a homemade wind generator?
Wondered if anyone knew how to build a simple homemade wind generator to power our home? A homemade wind generator that is not too complicated would be good. Do you know how to build a wind generator? Please help us.Thanks
admin answers:
The first thing you need to do is figure out how big of a wind generator you need. Most wind generators that are over 1000 watts in generating power are quite a bit more difficult to build. You will need to have your wind generator 15 feet above any obstruction within 300 feet. That is a must.
Some great resources exist but probably reading an article or two about building wind generators would help a lot. Try the resource I listed for a very informative article, there is mention of a website in the article where you can find some great wind generator plans too. Hope this helps, we have built 3 wind generators so far with these plans.
Mandy asks…
What are the purpose of the magnets in a wind generator?
In a wind generator there are several trapezoid magnets around the shaft of the prop, what are the purpose of these?
admin answers:
Electricity can be generated by moving a conducting wire so that it cuts through a magnetic field.
In short electricity from magnetism and motion.
Most electricity-generating systems involve rotating coils of wire in a magnetic field.
There are many ways of causing the coils to rotate:
Wind power:- wind generators
Water power:- water hitting a water wheel (turbine) causing it to rotate – hydroelectricity
Nuclear power:- heat generated in a nuclear reaction is used to produce a jet of steam which again hit a turbine causing it to rotate.
Oil, gas and coal could be used as alternatives to produce the jet of steam.
Finally rather than the coils of wire rotating some systems cause the magnets to rotate – as long as there is relative motion between the coils and the magnetic field either will do.

Your Questions About Wind Turbines Oklahoma
Robert asks…
Turbines or ridge line vents when you have a smaller home?
I’ve asked a lot of questions about this and I do apologize, but I had a roofing company guy say that in my state, Oklahoma, where it’s so hot having turbines (whirlibirds) is better than ridge vents because our wind makes the turbines really work and get the heat out, and also the fact that my ridge line isn’t that long (?).
I hope that makes sense?
My house is only 1200 sq feet and I have soffit vents and all the other companies just put ridge line vents (2) in my estimate, but this one guy said he liked turbines better.
Just wanted to get opinions.
admin answers:
In your part of the country ridge vents should be adequate. Do be sure the insulation is pulled back so that your soffit vents are uncovered. Turbines are one more hole in your roof and moving parts that can wear out. If you’re getting shingles be sure they are the architectural type and not the old three tab design. They will stick to the roof much better when the Oklahoma winds are howling.
Daniel asks…
At what point will farmers convert grass lands to….?
I was driving threw Oklahoma and Texas (on I-40) last week and thought… “Hmm, this is a pretty barren place… nothing but cattle and grass and the occasional wind mill… why not farm the sun”. And seriously? Why not throw up a couple acres of solar panels with a power meter that lets you sell it back to the power companies? Do you think this may be a future cash crop? 😛
I’m only halfway serious 😛 But seriously, what are your ideas for our future energy needs?
admin answers:
You are actually on to something. Those long, sweeping plains are also good potential locations for wind turbines. In fact, I once heard someone say that the Dakotas are basically “the Saudi Arabia of wind power”.
To answer your question, these things (solar, wind, etc) will happen when it becomes economically feasible to do so. With oil going up and up and up, that day may not be so far down the road.

Essential Services and the Economic Crisis?
With this economic crisis looming over all of our heads. There have been people from all walks of life finding themselves losing there jobs and income and the flow on effect is they lose therefore there livelihoods.
To avoid this from happening to myself i have come to the conclusion that getting into a job that is part of the essential services such as Fire, Police, Paramedics are the obvious but i am looking more attainable such as Energy, Food, Waste industries.
My question is what sort of jobs out there could one get into that would be in a position to ride out this economic crisis
admin answers:
Internet sales. Supplemental income or full time. Worldwide exposure of your product.
There’s also good money in saving people money. If you can offer a product or service that saves people money, you’re doing well right now.
This is however a double edge answer.
I think the thing to be thinking about is how fragile our livelihoods are. Think about it. If you lost your job today, how long could you live in your current home without any income?
We need to be smarter with our purchases, save our money, invest in items that can help us sustain in any crisis like solar heaters and electric panels, wind generators. Stop living outside our means.
The problem is everyone is flocking to “essential services”, but even the police have suffered budget cuts. We need to be able to maintain in times like this, be better prepared.
We all need to make our own individual financial foundation stronger. A tomato plant with a weak stem won’t be able to produce much fruit…especially in a drought.
Sandy asks…
how do i make electricity at home?
admin answers:
How sunny or windy is the place you live? You can use solar panels if its rarely cloudy where you live and windmills if the breeze is in excess of 3-5m/s.
Its fairly easy and cheap to make wind mills and solar panels at home yourself. Though professionally pre-made plans are usually for sale. If your home windspeeds are at 9-10 m/s you can power the entire place through a 3-10 KiloWatt wind generator. Any other way is usually impractical for home generation.
There are also petrol generators available. Though they are expensive and costly to run as well.

OKLAHOMA REDNECK IN NEW YORK CITY…?
A Redneck from Oklahoma walked into a bank in New York City and
asked for the loan officer. He told the loan officer that he was
going to Paris for an international redneck festival for two weeks
and needed to borrow $5,000 and that he was not a depositor of the
bank.
The bank officer told him that the bank would need some form of
security for the loan, so the Redneck handed over the keys to a new
Ferrari.. The car was parked on the street in front of the bank.
The Redneck produced the title and everything checked out. The loan
officer agreed to hold the car as collateral for the loan and
apologized for having to charge 12% annualized interest.
Later, the bank’s president and its officers all enjoyed a good laugh
at the Redneck from the south for using a $250,000 Ferrari as
collateral for a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drove the
Ferrari into the bank’s private underground garage and parked it.
Two weeks later, the Redneck returned, repaid the $5,000 and the
interest of $23.07. The loan officer said, “Sir, we are very happy
to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very
nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked
you out on Dunn & Bradstreet and found that you are a Distinguished
Alumni from the University of Oklahoma, a highly sophisticated
investor and multi-millionaire with real estate and financial
interests all over the world. Your investments include a large
number of wind turbines in the Oklahoama Panhandle. What puzzles us
is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?”
The good ‘ole Okie replied, “Where else in New York City can
I park my car for two weeks for only $23..07 and expect it to be
there when I return?”
