I was thinking about getting a certificate in renewable energy. . I was wondering if I should focus on wind or solar. Which one has a better future and pays more? Also is installing/maintaining a wind turbine harder to learn then solar? maybe I can learn both but focus on the harder of the two for my classes and learn the other one on my own. Is it worth my while putting a wind turbine onto my garage do power it?

As for the previous poster, my garage is across the back street from my house, and would cost me approx £1000 to run the electric from the extension, over the local authorities back street (which i have to pay a grant for!) and into said garage.

Would a muscle powered hybrid make sense for a boat’s drivetrain?

I am planning to build a muscle powered commuter boat, using pedals, as on a bicycle.
Now one of the challenges I face is transferring as much of the human motion as possible to the propeller.
I am not sure how much of a loss through friction there is when using steel gears or other setups, but I just had this idea pop up in my head instead:

What if the pedals only drove an electric motor, which generates DC electricity, which is then transferred straight to an electric motor driving the propeller?

The advantage of that would be that I could also feed solar or wind energy into the whole thing, somehow (that one needs some more brooding over, I know).

But would that make at least a little bit of sense, or is this hopelessly inefficient?

Every day I go to school and see on T.V. that the world seems to be coming to a close. Rising toxins in the air, tension with other countries, and even the small things like mass shootings in the U.S.
I feel as if my generation will die a terrible death due to sickness from overpopulation, or the holes in the Ozone being expanded to the point where radiation from the sun is literally pouring into our atmosphere.
I ask myself what can I do to help the environment, and I come to conclusions such as recycling, reusing, taking shorter showers, etc. But then I realize what the heck does this do? I feel like out of the 7 billion people on earth, only a micro percentage of people actually do something about the environment.
I recently watched a show on the Science Channel™ called: Earth, 2100. I mean to tell you that show freaked me out! They showed that in 100 years Las Vegas will be a ghost town due to the water shortage from the Colorado River. It also showed that people will have to wear gas masks whenever they walk outside. I don’t want my life to be like that! They also expect the population to triple by the time 2050 comes around. What does that mean for all of our resources? We will be short on water and food.

I’m sorry if I made anybody uncomfortable when reading this. I just started thinking about this topic and I have not been able to make any good out of it, or shake it out of my mind for the past week.
Any words of advice? I really don’t have anyone to talk to about this subject.

I see lots of pictures and vidoes of catastrophic failure of turbines due to over-speed, the most devastating of which are where the gearbox catches fire. How common is this e.g. number of failures per thousand turbines per year.

Is a wind turbine’s blade speed related to its power output?

I’m doing a science fair project on the power output of wind turbines. I had planned to actually measure the power output of various types of blades, angles of blades, etc., but building a system like this seems to be beyond my knowledge. So, I thought that I would just measure the speed of the blades as they turned. The wind speed would be the same for each test. Can I just compare the blade speeds, rather than power outputs, and still have accurate results as to which type of turbine is best?

This has been a manufacturing lead recovery. We have plenty of manufacturing jobs.

Our Aeronautical Engineering industry is thriving with Boeing & Airbus consistently getting orders. Demand for mechanical engineers, aerospace engineers, electrical engineers and other kinds have been soaring. Our defensive spending is also keeping our military engineering companies afloat.

Ford, GM, Tesla and other auto manufacturers are increasing hiring substantially to produce lower emission vehicles looking for electrical, mechanical, automotive engineers and even people with skills working with battery and energy technology.

We are currently the largest producers of photovoltaic cells, and rank high in wind turbines. Although China is still kicking our arses in this industry due to their government subsidies.

These are only a few examples, not exhaustive. Let’s not ignore the development that occurs in semiconductors here, although we don’t manufacture them.

I am getting extremely vexed as to how people complain about this sector not thriving. Keep in mind, this is a service economy, approx. 70%, only 20% is manufacturing and that number is only going to get lower.
With the 9% unemployment the gap between job openings and hires is massive. The rate of job openings is severely outpacing job hires is relatively large. Its not businesses fault that people were to lazy to acquire the skills to get hired thus they import foreign workers.

Here are articles from 2006 that indicates China is drilling for oil in the Florida straights, just 50 miles from the coast of Florida. So why is it the US isn’t drilling off the coast of Florida, California, in the Dakotas or in Anwr?

The oil that is in Anwr and the shale oil in the Dakotas are each larger than the oil in Saudi Arabia. So, why are we paying OPEC outrageous prices for a barrel of oil when we can be drilling our own?

How do very remote communities without electric grid hookup generate power?

I have a friend of mine who has been trying to figure out how very remote communities, too far away from an electric grid to get a hookup, generate power. This is because he was trying to research what it would take to go off the grid. He concluded solar wasn’t economically feasable, and to power a single house on wind would take about 12k, and you wouldn’t have power all the time. Hydro seemed more doable, about 3.5k, but finding a stream would be hard. He has a rather large plot of land with a natural gas pipeline on it (private), but…natural gas to electric generators need a full overhaul every 200 hours. There have to be remote communities and such which generate power. How do they do it?
