Why have we been allowing China to drill for oil 50 MILES from Florida coast?

Here are articles from 2006 that indicates China is drilling for oil in the Florida straights, just 50 miles from the coast of Florida. So why is it the US isn’t drilling off the coast of Florida, California, in the Dakotas or in Anwr?

The oil that is in Anwr and the shale oil in the Dakotas are each larger than the oil in Saudi Arabia. So, why are we paying OPEC outrageous prices for a barrel of oil when we can be drilling our own?

We should drill our own oil AND develop alternative energy sources such as nuclear and wind power. Why are we not doing that?

How do very remote communities without electric grid hookup generate power?

I have a friend of mine who has been trying to figure out how very remote communities, too far away from an electric grid to get a hookup, generate power. This is because he was trying to research what it would take to go off the grid. He concluded solar wasn’t economically feasable, and to power a single house on wind would take about 12k, and you wouldn’t have power all the time. Hydro seemed more doable, about 3.5k, but finding a stream would be hard. He has a rather large plot of land with a natural gas pipeline on it (private), but…natural gas to electric generators need a full overhaul every 200 hours. There have to be remote communities and such which generate power. How do they do it?
