Your Questions About Wind Turbine Technician

Chris asks…

Do wind turbine technicians need associates degrees or can trade schools suffice?

I heard a news story on NPR this morning about my state in critical demand for technicians, and how this particular trade school was helping students find employment in the wind energy sector. Online research on my behalf, tells me an associates degree is required.

Well, any turbine techs out there have a straight answer? I don’t want to drop 4 grand on a school and not be able to find work after wards.

admin answers:

Technicians go to trade school. Designers and planners need a BS in Engineering.

Mandy asks…

What kind of engineers make the windmills?

I am doing a oroject in science and i was just wondering what kind of engineers make the windmills or wind turbines or wind farms or whateveryou want to call them.

admin answers:

Mostly mechanical engineers, but electrical engineers for the generators, structural engineers for the structure.

Most things are designed by teams that cover multiple fields.

Edit: correction: technicians and workers make the wind turbines, engineers design them.

Your Questions About Wind Turbine Generators Wiki

Charles asks…

How do wind turbines work to store/distribute energy?

admin answers:

I dont want to copy the entire article from the site—please do visit the link below for full information

A wind turbine is a machine for converting the mechanical energy in wind into electrical energy. If the mechanical energy is used directly by machinery, such as a pump or grinding stones, the machine is usually called a windmill. If the mechanical energy is then converted to electricity, the machine is called a wind generator

Richard asks…

Could using wind power have environmental consequences?

I was wondering if sucking the energy out of wind could affect the environment. Wind is very important in nature and I was wondering if there has been a study done that looked into possible consequences?

admin answers:

It seems no matter how many time this is asked and answered it keeps coming back. Simple logic should tell you that if you look at the head on profile of the blades they describe a circle as they spin and at any given moment the blades occupy a tiny percentage of that circle. There is also the tower that holds the blades up but again they are usually only a few meters wide and the arch of the blades is usually at least 10m above the ground for safety. If you wish to talk about stopping the wind a forest has far more of an effect.
The average wind generator is only ~50-70m high, most wind effect relates to precipitation and cloud movement/formation which occurs well above this height, even the largest wind generator in the world, has by comparison a small blade area and with a metal mesh tower that offer quite small wind resistance. The Troposphere is ~10km high which is a little more than 50 or even 200m.

Your Questions About Wind Generators Alaska

Sandra asks…

What is that with DC? China will erect 3 bridges in Alaska, California, and elsewhere while we suffer from a?

lack of work? This was an ABC news release that was only reported briefly. The report said that there are not enough certified welders in America so they had to involve China. I understand that they will build the main structures in China, then ship them here to assemble. We really have Moe,Curly, and Larry running the country now!

admin answers:

That’s the Obama Administration for you. Screw the American worker, while pumping us up about job creation. Obama has done this before where he’ll bring in European-made wind generator components, and have them assembled by Chinese engineers. Something tells me this might be a deal Obama worked out to help pay off the money we are indebted to China. But the real purpose is to once again, pull the rug out from American workers.

Knowing the lack of oversight in China, I’m sure the metal beams and supports will have to be replaced in a matter of a few years before they rust out and collapse. So I don’t think there will be a lack of work for the welder. But this will be another signature failure, courtesy of Obama.

Helen asks…

Do you think the large wind turbines for wind energy are unsightly?

I have heard that many people believe the wind turbines are ugly and should be kept out of the view of homes. I believe they are beautiful and are necessary. What do you think?

Your Questions About Wind Turbine Generators

Maria asks…

Why do wind turbines have the generator at the top?

Wouldn’t it be cheaper and easier to maintenance a wind turbine if the generator was at the bottom? Using helicopters to maintenance turbines has got to be more expensive than a truck. All it would need for the thing to work with the generator at the bottom is a large pole, connected to the windmill by a set of two gears. The way old grain mills used to work.

admin answers:

Hey Marcus, there are two reasons, cost and efficiency. The old grain mills had to transmit the torque to the building at the bottom mechanically, they didn’t have electric generators and voltage regulators in those days, if they did, they would certainly have run a pair of wires down that tower instead of some gears and push rods. The other reason, efficiency, is a bigger player today than it was 100 years ago. Most modern turbines today, which generally have 3 long slender blades instead of a dozen or so square metal ones can convert about one third of the energy in the moving column of air to electricity. The old style turbines you saw on farms centuries ago were maybe 5% efficient. The other reason for those big rectangular blades was starting torque, mainly to start the water pump. They were not interested in having the thing run well, or at all in 100 mph winds with tremendous RPM’s, it would simply destroy the entire mechnism.

We run our home on solar and wind right now. Our wind turbine is a commercially made unit a little bigger than a ceiling fan, but can develope almost 1000 watts in good wind. It is small and light enough to take up to the top of the tower in a backpack and install by hand with ordinary hand tools, that was the main reason we selected it. For our home, we should have a larger one, maybe 1500 watts or so, but the weight of the generator almost requires the use of a small crane at that point. I do not know of anyone using helicopters to install or service rotors today. The large commercial ones actually have ladders built into the inside of the tower, and space to work inside the tower top housing. Smaller ones like mine either go on a Rohns Guyed Lattice tower, or similar type of tower, which has a ladder built into the framing for climbing, or they use a crane truck to reach the top.

In our experience the last 11 years, the only thing that needs periodic service is the electronics, regulators, and batteries, which in our case is at the bottom of the tower. In fact, those devices are all in our battery room in the garage. Our previous turbine was a smaller unit with the generator and electronics all in the housing. Each time the regulator burned up or malfunctioned, the entire unit had to come off the top of the tower. This was the main reason we upgraded to the unit we have now. Exposure to the elements, gusty winds and even lightning never seem to bother the generator itself, so we make very few trips up the tower these days. Take care Marcus, Rudydoo

Your Questions About Wind Generators Home Use

Carol asks…

Is it safe to stay home in Connecticut when Hurricane Irene is approaching?

I live in Southern Connecticut and I’m really scared about this hurricane irene. Is it safe for me to stay at home where i live? I’m very concerned and just need to know before it comes our way. Thank you!

admin answers:

Oh you northerners 🙂
I’m from NC, so listen up. Unless you are on the coast, you won’t need to worry. Just be prepared if your area is forcasted to be in a flooding zone. By the time it gets up there the winds are supposed to be mostly tropical storm force, so don’t worry about that unless you have large trees on your property. You should have a few things though:
-enough bottled water supply for a few days
-first aid kit
-flash lights
-batteries, lots and lots of batteries
-weather radio in the event the power gets knocked out
-possibly a generator if you really want power in your home
-non-refrigerated food
-and also have supplies in the event that you need to clean up your property afterwards (chainsaws, brooms, leaf blowers, etc)

I’m supposed to get hit tonight/tomorrow so I’ll be having fun. Good luck!

Ken asks…

What are best wind and solar powered generators?

This would be for a residential area and need to comply to fire and other safety regulations. I want to generate electric power for home and electric vehicles.

admin answers:

You’re asking a difficult question only because the technology is improving each month. What is the best today probably won’t be the best next year. For wind power you will need a wind availibility survey describing the average wind conditions throughout the year for your locality. Every homesite is a bit different. To establish a cost/benefit analysis your first have to know how much wind energy is available.

Your Questions About Wind Turbine

Carol asks…

How much electrical energy (in kWh) can the wind turbine generate in a year?

Assume a wind turbine with a hub 50.0 m above the ground, a rotor diameter of 50.0 m, and a wind-power conversion efficiency of 25%. The turbine operates in an area with an average wind-power density of 500 watts/m2 at 50 m altitude. How much electrical energy (in kWh) can the wind turbine generate in a year?

admin answers:

The question is written to allow for a rather simple solution, unlike the challenges of real wind turbine power and energy estimation.

Energy = Power x Time

Electric power produced = conversion efficiency x gross wind power

Gross wind power = power density x turbine swept area

So, with all the equations at hand, we can solve the problem.

Turbine swept area = 2 x pi x (25 m)^2 = 3927 m^2
Wind power density = 500 W/m^2

Thus, Gross wind power = 500 W/m^2 x 3927 m^2 = 1.9635 x10^6 W = 1.9635 MW

Electric power produced = 0.25 * 1.9635 MW = 0.49087 MW

Since the problem identifies the wind power as long-term average, we can calculate the average energy produced in a year.

Energy (Joules) = Watts x seconds
Energy = 0.49087 MW x 31536000 s = 15.487 x10^6 MJ
But the question asked for energy measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh).

So, Energy = 490.87 kW * 8760 h = 4300100 kWh produced in 1 year.

Unfortunately, a real wind turbine would produce this energy in an unscheduleable manner, typically peaking when the demand (load) is lowest. That’s the challenge of wind energy.

Mandy asks…

How much money would an average wind turbine save on a $240 energy bill on an average $31 day month?

On average days too. Like during a warm front. Also include the price of the wind turbine, and how much time it would take to pay off the turbine completely.

admin answers:

Wind energy is not continues and hence it is not going to cut your bill drastically. Even the wind farms can built not to feed continuously to the grid but intermittently. For individuals the cost of wind turbine is going to be very expensive compared to the power bill. Good to go for one with the impact on environment but if you ar going for saving dollars then you are going to be disappointed.

Your Questions About Wind Turbine Generators How They Work

Daniel asks…

Where can gold be used in wind turbines?

The main parts of a wind turbine is the blades, the rotor, the generator, the tail and the tower. But where (and how) can “gold” be used in one of these parts (or others) when the properties of gold is put into consideration?
Thank you for your answer, but if you HAVE to use gold in a wind turbine where would you use it?

admin answers:

Gold are good conductor of electricity, and sometimes it will alloy it with copper for semiconductor devices, gold are not good in turbine blades or same, because of the brittleness against high torque force, it is also not advisable in generators and rotors, they are not enough to produce magnitic force to convert it into electrical energy, it also not advisable in the construction of the tail and the tower, you need enough strength to the carry the whole weight of the wind mill, and the most number one reason is……………. It is too expensive to construct a huge wind turbine made of gold

John asks…

How can i do a wind generator that creat electricity for a science fair project?

Hi, my teacher told me to create a wind generator for my science fair. Its not only doing the wing generator,no, i have to make electricity with it, like i get a bulb and it had to turn on with out batteries, only with the wing thing. Can someone give me like a web page or something that could help me please.
